"He wasn't just our cat he was everyone's cat"
Justine Spencer, 2020
Cathedral Cat Gerald of York lived within the precinct of York Minster Cathedral with his cat family Donald and his human family, Justine Samuel and Elise.
Affectionately known as the York Minster Cat (an unofficial title) he regularly patrolled the Minster presinct until he died on September 14th 2020.
Following his passing Gerald received condolences from all over the world. One of them was from Larry the cat, the resident cat at Number 10 Downing Street, London.
On the 14th of September 2020 Gerald was buried by his family within the Minster precinct. Donald came too and a service was dedicated in memory of Gerald at York's cathedral.
Money was raised by Gerald's friends to commission a memorial sculpture of him.The sculpture of Gerald is part of York's Cat Trail which is hosted by The Cat Gallery, Low Petergate, York.
